I'm riding the famous LEJOG route from Land's End in Cornwall, where I work, to John O' Groats in Caithness (where my family came from many generations back). This is a 1600km (1000mi) journey from the southwest tip of England to the northeast tip of Scotland. I'm on a 1989 Peugeot Savoie touring bicycle, unsupported - just a small tent and a lot of lentils. As part of the challenge, I aim to consume as little single-use plastic as possible. I'll be keeping a diary of my adventure here -
I'm raising money for the following organisations, for the following reasons, and I'd love your support.
WaterAid - how can it be that people don't have clean water to drink, or access to proper sewage? Compared to all the superfluous technology being sold to us every day, you'd think universal water infrastructure would be a comparatively easy problem. Apparently it isn't, and therefore half of the money I raise will go to helping that this basic necessity becomes universally accessible.
Surfers Against Sewage - though I do not surf, I had the pleasure of meeting some of these folks last year, and was really impressed with their passion and efficacy in removing waste and plastics from our seas and waterways. On my view this is a very well-run organisation on an excellent mission.
Sustrans - these people implemented, maintain, and continue to develop the National Cycle Network, a largely traffic-free system of cycling routes across the UK. You can't undertake a cycling trip like this without giving something back to those who make it as safe as possible.
