Running the Manchester Marathon to help young girls achieve their dreams!

Katie Barclay

Hi everyone!

I'm Katie and I barely run but I do believe in young women being able to achieve their dreams. I am running the Manchester Marathon on 27th April 2025 to aid two separate causes.

The first is a cause close to my heart and home. As Registrar for The Hammond (a specialist, full-time performing arts school and college), I have seen hundreds of young people audition over the last year. While everyone who is offered a place is incredibly talented and receiving an opportunity I wish I had as a young person, some of the most talented individuals cannot take advantage of these opportunities due to their economic background. I doubt that I will be able to assist considerably with their fees with this fundraiser, however being able to assist with uniform or show fees for an individual would be a dream. Anything which lightens the financial burden on the family of an incredibly talented child.

The second cause is more international. Receiving an education is first and foremost a right. The Malala Fund works to secure 12 years of free, safe, quality education for all girls so they can learn and lead without fear. They focus on secondary school, when gender discrimination increasingly affects adolescent girls’ futures. Completing secondary school opens up opportunities for girls to make their own life choices, allowing them to reach their fullest potential. Currently, around the world, nearly 120 million girls are out of school primarily due to gender based violence and discrimination.

The coming months will not be easy. I have always been more at home on a stage or in front of a spreadsheet than in sporting feats. I am running the Manchester Marathon on 27th April 2025. As a ginger who cannot handle any heat above 20 degrees, I've planned to run and train through the autumn and winter. I'm sure I'll regret this around Christmas and when it's snowing but I have no doubt the causes above will keep me motivated.

If you are available, please do come along to cheer me on!

Thank you for taking the time to read this, you have no idea how much I appreciate your support.
