In 2004 I was in a horrific car crash and my life changed forever. I broke 26 bones and had a stroke. I spent two years in hospital and continue to be in and out to this day. I suffer from complex neurological and orthopaedic trauma and walk with two sticks, BUT I AM LUCKY. Most people who suffer as I did, do not make it, or are in a wheelchair.
So on this 20th anniversary I have set myself a huge physical and financial challenge. I want to climb the 3 highest peaks in the UK. I shall be walking Snowden on April 20th, Scafell Pike on 6th May and Ben Nevis on 7th September.
But I also want to raise a serious amount of money for 4 charities all of which are linked to my story.
Firstly, dayonetrauma.org who help people navigate the recovery from extreme physical trauma. I had advocates in my family and amongst my friends for every step of my 47 operations but many do not and it is overwhelming. They are building an amazing support network of peers, but the need is enormous and they want to expand into every major trauma centre in the UK.
Secondly, Iamthecode.org who train girls in refugee camps with computer science and digital skills. If I had not be fortunate enough to be involved in the early days of e-commerce, I would not have had the resources to find the best care both at home and in hospital. These girls may never leave the camps, but at least they have more opportunity to get work through new skills. IATC wants to have trained 1m girls by 2030.
Thirdly, abilitynet.org.uk who work to help everyone use digital services, particularly people with disabilities.
I am proud Patron of the above 3 amazing charities.
But there is also horatiosgarden.org. This charity helps patients with severe spinal cord injuries enjoy outside visits and beautiful gardens. I broke 28 bones in the crash and had a stroke. Many of these patients broke none at all and yet will never walk or stand. Access to nature is a relief and a tonic. My two 7 year old sons are walking with me and helping raise money and they are particularly focused on this organisation.
Please help me to help these different charities, all of whom plug vital holes in different systems of care.
Last weekend my sons and I visited https://www.horatiosgarden.org.uk/ with my incredible aunt, Dido, who has been volunteering there for 5 years. It was wonderful to see the impact the plants, flowers and garden room were having on the spinal injury patients and their families. Stoke Mandeville is one of the leading spinal units in the UK but it is still a challenging environment to spend months and months as you recover from life changing injuries. The low rise, dark wards are in stark contrast to the bright, cheery and green outside space built and maintained by HG. You can see from the photo the beautiful wooden building that people can enjoy,
We met multiple patients and their carers who told us about the palpable difference that the charity has made. One woman has been coming to the hospital every day since her husbands accident and said “I would not be able to cope if I couldn’t come to this space, every day my only mission is to get him out of the ward, into his wheelchair and over here”.
I often reflect on how it’s the strangest role of the dice that I broke 28 bones but I can walk and hopefully quite far with the help of my sticks! Yet some of the people we met broke one or even no bones but will never walk again. It is imperative to help and give some joy into the daily life in hospital by supporting HG.
Felix and Milo were the smallest volunteers but they helped clean the tables, empty the dishwasher and offer round cakes and sweets. They loved it and told me afterwards “what a cool place Mama”.
Let’s go! I want to turn the 20th anniversary of the car crash that changed my life forever into something positive.
Training has begun, friends and family are ready to launch off at the bottom of the mountains - time to start the climbs :-)
20th April is snowden
4th may is scafell pike
7th sept is ben nevis

It's so good to know that you are alive and giving it your utmost. I remember using lastminute.com and I remember the day your life changed. Morocco was also a life changer for me. My brother was under a car changing a wheel. The car slipped off the jack onto his head....a best friend had kidney failure in the Riff mountains. Getting them out of there was an epic that myself and my girlfriend will never forget. We were young and we prayed and we did not give up.
