Help Me Set Up Cancer Support for the Black Community in Bedford
21888
My name is Joanne Gordon and I am on a mission to raise funds to help set up cancer support for the Black community within Bedford, UK. Funds raised will go towards two cancer charities that have supported me and will help me to achieve this goal: Above & Beyond and Cancer Black Care.
Why this is more than just a fundraiser for me...
In January 2025, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and since that time I have received fantastic, personalised support from Above & Beyond Bedford and Cancer Black Care.
But it is not this way for everyone, and I am very aware that there is still more work to be done to ensure the cultural needs of Bedford's diverse community are understood and met within cancer care.
This event is my way of saying thank you, while also giving something back to both of these charity organisations.
During my time receiving treatment for cancer, I have noticed more people from the Black community going into oncology. There are support groups that run for people affected by cancer generally, but I think it is really important that a space is created where people from the Black community can come together and speak freely about the things that affect us racially and culturally.
I want this cause to gain support. I want us to share ideas, encourage conversations, increase knowledge and raise awareness of the resources and support that are available.
Most importantly, I want to help create a space where people feel comfortable talking, sharing their experiences and supporting one another.
In-person details for the cause
