Louis cycles from London to Istanbul

On 31 August, I'll be setting off on a self-supported cycle from London to Istanbul. Covering around 4,200km over approximately 60 days, I'll be carrying everything I need on my touring bike, including a tent, sleeping bag and camping equipment, with the aim of reaching the Hagia Sophia entirely by bicycle.

While the challenge is about adventure and pushing myself outside my comfort zone, it's also an opportunity to raise money for two charities that are close to people I know and whose work has had a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Olivia Inspires was established in memory of Olivia Burt, an incredibly driven and talented school friend, who tragically passed away in 2018. The charity continues her legacy by giving disadvantaged children in the New Forest opportunities to realise their potential in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the arts and sport. This support can take many forms, from funding musical instruments and sports equipment to paying for training courses and educational trips, helping young people pursue their passions and ambitions.

I'm also raising money for The Thomas Ball Children's Cancer Fund in support of my friend and former colleague, Adam. His family received support from the charity after his daughter, Frankie, was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour earlier this year. The Thomas Ball Children's Cancer Fund supports children and young people undergoing cancer treatment, along with their families. The charity provides free holidays and short breaks, funds specialist equipment and experiences for children, and supports childhood cancer research. Their work helps families create positive memories and enjoy valuable time together away from hospital appointments and treatment.

Both charities make a genuine difference to the lives of children and young people, and this challenge felt like a fitting opportunity to support their work while raising awareness of the impact they have on the communities they serve.
