Boxing Is Love × OWBC: South Africa
Since 2018, we've run mission trips across Ghana, Liberia and South Africa. Our trips bring boxing to underserved communities to cultivate a culture of resilience, discipline and love, and from there, we build lasting foundations that help people stay healthy, understand their bodies and lead better futures, through education in nutrition, sports science, literacy and numeracy, and by improving local infrastructure.
Zwelihle's children face real barriers. A 37:1 child-to-teacher ratio in local schools and a lack of safe, structured spaces to spend time outside school hours mean that opportunities to build support networks are scarce, and where they do exist, they're often run on almost nothing. As a result, massive unmet demand relative to capacity, and reliance on very few people, is often a serious issue.
Boxing Is Love is partnering with Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) to change that. OWBC has trained young people out of a dilapidated house and later shipping containers in Zwelihle, Hermanus, giving kids a safe and positive place to be, while producing South African national champions along the way, with almost nothing behind it. We're stepping in to build on that foundation by bringing our nutrition and sports science programme to OWBC, sending volunteer coaches and specialists on mission trips, refurbishing spaces, and equipping young competitive boxers with the protective gear and basic kit they need.
OWBC currently reaches 210 registered children, with over 5,500 learners in nearby schools who could benefit from the same programme. Your donation directly funds Boxing Is Love's work to get us there: training local coaches, delivering our programmes on the ground, and giving this club the tools to grow sustainably long after we leave.
