Run - Connect - Protect.
19969
We work for the Hastings & Rother Community Learning Disability Team (CLDT) in East Sussex as a Learning Disability Nurse (Hopkins) and a psychiatrist (Dr Strings). We support people with learning disabilities around lots of issues, and we're specialists in mental health.
Over the years, we've come firmly to believe that good mental health is about far more than medication. Exercise, connection, feeling valued and doing things you enjoy with friends and family all matter. Importantly, people need to roam - we can't stay cooped up inside all day! Time in the natural world can make a real difference to how we feel.
There is a lot to feel overwhelmed by at the moment. Living costs are high, local support is under pressure, and many people feel isolated or lonely. Then there is climate change, pollution and the loss of green spaces. It is easy to feel small beside problems that seem so enormous.
On a run one evening we decided we were fed up of feeling overwhelmed and needed to do something instead. Something big.
Extreme Psychiatry takes good mental health out of the clinic and into the big, wide world. We're aiming to raise £1 million for charities that support local connection and protect the natural world.
We're going to race until we retire in 2045. Nineteen years is long enough to cover an alarming number of miles, but the routes are virtual so we can still turn up to work without a mountainous backlog of appointments and paperwork.
- Dr Strings is running right around the world - Team Earth.
- Hopkins is building a volunteer team to run to the Moon and back - Team Moon.
It's the longest race in the solar system - and we'd love you to join us:
- Donate to support our charities
- Follow Team Earth from the comfort of your sofa
- Or Join Team Moon, contributing as many miles as you can run, walk or whizz in a wheelchair.
