Eyeball Marathon World Record Attempt- Raising Money for Acanthamoeba Keratitis
19548
November 17th 2025, I went to bed with a slightly bloodshot eye. The next morning, my sight would never be the same again. What followed was indescribable pain day and night as a parasite burrowed into my left eye from a cause still unknown. After 4 misdiagnosises, I was finally diagnosed with Acanthamoeba Keratitis, an ultra rare eye disease, little researched which involves amoebas slowly eating away at your cornea.
Treatment consists of hourly eye drops day & night of an extremely toxic susbstance in an effort to stop the ameobas advance. Lack of sleep, severe photosensitivity and the strongest pain killers making no effect, the following 3 months were lived in complete darkness. 8 months on I am still on daily eye drops, with the amoebas ever present in my cornea with little sign of moving. Although life is moving forward again I am passionate to raise awarness and assist in reasearch of this terrifying and life sapping disease.
This brings me onto the marathon attempt. I will be competing in the Amsterdam marathon on 18.10.2026 dressed in an eyeball, with an effort to beat the Guinness World Record of the fastest marathon dressed as a human body part currently standing at 03:14:28. An incredibly fast time in its own right, let alone dressed as an eyeball head to toe.
The fundraising and donations will go to two very specific charities. Acanthamoeba Keratitis Eye Foundation (AKEF) & Fight for Sight. AKEF have supported me throughout my journey and donations will go to areas currently overlooked: Pyschological Impact of the trauma, Pain management, Quality of life outcomes & Shaping better Clinical care.
Fight for Sights have ringfenced the fundrasier to specfically research a PhD Studentship researching the Novel Host Defense Peptides (HDP) for Acanthamoeba Keratitis, in the aim to develop a new HDP-treatment for AK.
I've worked closely with both charities throughout my journey and have seen first-hand the difference they make. I'll also keep this page updated so you can see exactly how your donations are helping to improve research, care, and hope for people living with this devastating disease.
Please share where possible & any donations are greatly appreciated!
