The Stag National

The Stag National is our village’s own take on the Grand National — a fun, slightly chaotic and brilliantly entertaining day of hobby horse racing, bringing together our community in Low Crosby for something truly memorable. Expect fancy dress, teams, laughter, a parade ring atmosphere and a whole host of side events, all designed to create a day that people of all ages can enjoy. At its heart, the event is about bringing people together — friends, families, locals and visitors — to share in something light-hearted but meaningful.

But beyond the fun, The Stag National has a clear purpose: to raise vital funds for charities that make a real difference to lives close to home.

We’ve chosen to support Oak Tree Animals’ Charity because of the incredible work they do rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals across Cumbria. Their compassion and dedication give animals a second chance, and as a community that values care and responsibility, this felt a natural fit.

We are also proud to support Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Children’s Hospice, who provide outstanding care and support for both adults and children with life-limiting conditions, as well as their families. Their work offers comfort, dignity and compassion when it matters most, supporting people through the most challenging times with incredible kindness and expertise. They are a charity that touches so many lives across our community, and supporting them is our way of giving something back.

By taking part, donating or simply coming along, you’re not just enjoying a great day out — you’re helping these charities continue their vital work. The Stag National is about community, connection and making a difference, all in one unforgettable day.

Event Instructions

Race Rules & Terms Summary
By entering or attending The Stag National, participants and spectators agree to follow event rules designed to ensure a safe, fair and enjoyable experience for everyone.
All races are run using hobby horses only. These can be homemade or shop-bought but must be safe, lightweight and suitable for running. Participants must complete the course on foot at all times, clearly “riding” their hobby horse throughout.
Race categories, formats and distances will vary, including individual races and team relays (maximum 5 participants per team). All participants must start and finish as directed by race officials and complete the full course, including all jumps/obstacles where applicable.
For safety, appropriate footwear must be worn (no bare feet, heels or unsafe shoes). Fancy dress is strongly encouraged, but costumes must not obstruct vision, movement or pose a risk to the wearer or others.

Participants must follow instructions from marshals at all times. Any unsafe, reckless or unsporting behaviour may result in disqualification. The organisers reserve the right to stop or amend races if necessary for safety reasons or due to weather/ground conditions.
Children under 18 must have permission from a parent or guardian to take part and may be required to run in age-appropriate race categories.
By entering, participants acknowledge that they take part at their own risk. The event organisers, sponsors and venue accept no liability for injury, loss or damage, except where required by law.
Entry fees are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled.
Photography and video will be taken during the event and may be used for promotional purposes. By attending, you consent to being included unless you inform the organisers otherwise. We encourage a spirit of enjoyment, participation and good sportsmanship at all times.
