Sam & Katie's London Marathon!

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY & CHILDREN WITH CANCER

We're running the London Marathon on April 26th, 2026 to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy (MD) & Children with Cancer (CwC) — something I’ve been aware of since I was really young. Hard to believe, but it’ll be 17 years since I first ran a marathon for MD at the Berlin Marathon in 2009!

Sam's story:

As I always used to say, “I’ve known Martin Wood literally since the moment I was born.” We grew up side by side like any two lads—playing football, going to Scouts, and watching Sheffield United (The Blades!) every chance we got.

But Martin had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a muscular degenerative disease. As we got older, he became less mobile and everyday things that came easily to me were much harder for him. Despite all of that, he never let it crush his spirit. He was always the first to call you out if you weren’t pulling your weight—whether it was on the rugby pitch, the football field, or even just my loyalty to The Blades.

The illness meant he needed a wheelchair throughout his teenage years, and heartbreakingly, Martin passed away in 2003 at just 16. On top of the MD, he and his family also had to face a rare and aggressive cancer in his final years. That’s why I’m also raising money for Children with Cancer—something that’s touched other family friends’ kids too.

Growing up, Martin’s mum Sally ran marathons all over the world to support MD. More recently, his brothers, Roger and Alistair, have taken on the London Marathon to continue that legacy. So it feels only right that I step up again, roll back the years, and do my bit by running a marathon for MD and Children with Cancer.

This charity has been a big part of my life, and I want to raise as much as I possibly can.
