The Foundation works closely with Young Farmers Clubs, HSE, the Farm Safety Partnerships and a range of farming organisations to help raise awareness of farm safety among young farmers, challenge and change their attitudes towards farming safely and reduce the toll of injuries and fatalities which bring heartbreak and misery to numerous families and rural communities every year.
The Farm Safety Foundation, or Yellow Wellies as they are also known, aims to preserve and protect the physical and mental wellbeing of the next generation of farmers, equipping them with smart strategies and specific skills to live well and farm well. The independent charity was set up by NFU Mutual in 2014 amidst rising concerns over the high level of fatal and life changing injuries on farms.
A key part of the charity’s work is their two national campaigns, Farm Safety Week and Mind Your Head. The charity runs an education programme which is delivered to agricultural colleges and universities across the UK, and through the National Federation of Young Farmers Club network. To date, their training has been delivered to over 23,000 young farmers.
The charity also works in partnership with key sector stakeholders, settings and groups to reduce risk-taking and poor safety behaviours and provide support. They also conduct sector-leading research into attitudes and behaviours to understand the risk factors around farm safety and poor mental health. The Farm Safety Foundation may be a small charity, but we have big ambitions and work hard to ensure the next generation of farmers are resilient and have the knowledge they need to live well and farm well.
Farming is important to the UK economy and the conservation of our beautiful countryside. It is also an industry where many farmers work alone, against time pressures and encounter a variety of risks. In just a few seconds a farm incident can change the lives of a farming family forever. Through their national campaigns, Farm Safety Week and Mind Your Head, and their education programme, the Farm Safety Foundation is preserving and protecting the physical and mental wellbeing of the next generation of farmers and equipping them with smart strategies and specific skills to live well and farm well.
