Freedom From Torture

Around the world, torture is still used to silence and destroy lives. We stand with survivors, providing therapy and support, and fighting for change together.

Freedom from Torture is dedicated to healing and protecting torture survivors.

We were founded on Christmas Eve 1985 as the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture by Helen Bamber and Amnesty International volunteers. For over 30 years, through our services, we have been helping survivors overcome their torture and live better, happier lives.

Torture pushes people to unbearable extremes of pain.

Whenever it happens, whoever it happens to and for whatever reason, torture is always wrong. We are never afraid to call this out.

Torture is used to intimidate, repress and steal people’s humanity.

We work with people who have survived torture to rebuild their lives and find their voice again.

Survivors and their experiences are at the heart of everything we do.

We use the expert evidence gained from working directly with people who have survived torture to campaign for real change both in the UK and globally.

Without support nothing we do is possible.

Almost all of our income is raised through donations. It is only with your help that we are able to continue the fight against torture.

We provide specialist psychological therapy to help asylum seekers and refugees who have survived torture recover and rebuild their lives in the UK. And we provide training for professionals working with torture survivors.

With survivors, we campaign for change in the UK and across the world. Together, we raise awareness and influence decision-makers about torture and its impact.
