BVA fundraising walk for cancer

At BVA we’re used to raising money for charities that directly support the veterinary professions or animal welfare. This time we’re doing something a bit different – and we hope everyone will understand why.

At the end of last year we were devastated to lose two of our dearest colleagues and friends to cancer within the space of a few weeks. Simon Doherty enjoyed a distinguished career as a veterinary surgeon, was well known within the veterinary profession and served as BVA President 2018-2019. Jennie McMurtry joined BVA in 2021 as our Executive Assistant providing invaluable support to the Officer team and CEO. They both shared a passion for life and a cheeky sense of humour. We miss them hugely.

The BVA team wanted to do something together in memory of Jennie and Simon – and to fundraise for their chosen cancer charities, Marie Curie and the Royal Marsden. Both charities do hugely important work, and we know that Jennie received the best possible care in the Royal Marsden hospital.

So we’ve decided to do a 10km walk to raise some money. We’ll be setting off from BVA’s HQ in central London on 17 September and our route will take us through three Royal Parks (Regent’s Park, Hyde Park and St James’s Park).

If you’d like to sponsor us or make a donation we’d be incredibly grateful. All proceeds will be split equally between the two charities.

We’d also like to say a special thank you to our partners at Lloyd & Whyte, who have kindly offered to match our fundraising efforts up to £5,000.

Thank you for your support and generosity.
