Dan's running a lot

In classic me fashion, I've turned something that started as an escape from life into a challenge.

Over the course of 2.5 weeks I'm running the Hackney Half, Edinburgh marathon and taking part in the Biggest Relay Race in the UK – North vs South.

I wasn't planning to do any of it in aid of a charity as I wanted to challenge myself and fundamentally that hasn't changed. However in the last 5 years 2 guy's I've known have tragically lost their lives to suicide. If by raising awareness, this encourages someone to talk to a mate or a professional then that would be incredible.

Everyone has dark moments, days, weeks, months and even years. It may not even be as strong as that, we all have phases when we just don't feel ourselves.

I have amazing family and friends and by most standards I have been incredibly fortunate with my upbringing and the support I've always received. I have no doubt many people would love to "only" have to deal with the things I've struggled with and I totally understand that. But it's that comparison which, I think, is a major reason that many guy's (including myself) still find it hard to talk to someone about their own battles. Fear of judgement or fear of feelings being invalidated can be paralysing. So many exude confidence and happiness while internally battling with so much. The more I talk to mates, the more I realise we all battle so many of the same negative internal thoughts, even if the situation is completely different.

I really hope this doesn't come across preachy and I know nobody asked for this. This isn't about me, it's about, hopefully, encouraging more conversation. If anyone wants to talk, whether to a mate, a professional or even me, please reach out without hesitation.

N.B If anyone wants to donate to the incredible work these charities do then please feel free but don't feel obliged to!
