Emily-Jane Harding

πŸŽ‰ Help Me Turn 30 by Giving Back – One Step at a Time πŸŽ‰

Hi, I’m Emily-Jane (also known as Em-J) – a passionate hiker, a retained firefighter, and someone who loves a good challenge (especially on my birthday!). For my 30th in 2025, I’m taking on the biggest adventure of my life: walking the full 630 miles of the South West Coast Path – solo and unsupported, carrying everything I need on my back.

🌊 About the Challenge:
The South West Coast Path is the UK’s longest National Trail, stretching from Minehead in Somerset to South Haven Point in Dorset, and winding through four stunning counties – Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset. It’s not just long; it’s tough – the total elevation is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest four times!

Why this trail? It holds a special place in my heart. I’ve loved the parts I’ve already walked (Newquay to Penzance was a dream), and Minehead brings back fond childhood memories. So when I was hiking the Cumbria Way for my 29th, this felt like the perfect next step to mark the big 3-0.

πŸ’› Why I’m Doing This:
Originally, this was just a personal milestone. But the more I talked about it, the more I realised it could mean something more. I want to use this journey to give backβ€”to support causes that matter deeply to me and to make every mile count.

I’m fundraising for three incredible charities:

- The Fire Fighters Charity: As a retained firefighter, this one is close to home. They provide physical, emotional, and social support to fire service personnel and their families during difficult times.

- The Veterans Foundation: Through my full-time work, I’ve seen the life-changing impact of this charity. They support veterans, serving military members, and their families, especially those in hardship.

- The South West Coast Path Association: Since I’ll be spending so much time on the trail, I want to give back. This charity maintains and protects the path so more people can enjoy its beauty.

A Huge Thanks to My Sponsors:
β˜• TrueStart Coffee, who are keeping me going with their incredible coffee throughout this journey!
πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ Louise from LTJ Sports Massage Therapy who has sorted out my niggles and got me into Tip Top condition for the hike!
πŸ₯˜ Base Camp Food, who are keeping me fulled with some very tasty meals!

🌟 How You Can Help:
Whether you can donate a little or a lot, every pound makes a difference. Your support will not only keep me going when the blisters hit, but more importantly, it’ll make a real impact on lives across the UK.

πŸ‘‰ Follow my journey on Instagram @emilyjaneharding, where I’ll be sharing updates, training hikes, behind-the-scenes stories, and (hopefully) stunning views from the trail.

Let’s make my 30th birthday unforgettable – for all the right reasons. πŸ’›

⏳ 2 Weeks to Go!

I can’t believe I’m just 14 days away from setting off on my 630-mile hike along the South West Coast Path! This weekend was a bit of an interesting one … I had planned to get out on a wild camp in the Roaches straight after work on Friday, but unfortunately, due to the yellow weather warning for thunderstorms I decided it probably wasn’t a wise idea to camp on a hill in that! On Saturday, I joined some work colleagues for a beautiful 8-mile walk around Carsington Water, it was a great opportunity to network and catch up with some amazing people, who I don’t normally get the chance to talk to. On Sunday, I had an amazing adventure day planned with Matt, climbing up through the levels of Australia in Dinorwic Quarry, however, when we arrived, it turned out the quarry was closed for House of the Dragon filming πŸ˜… We tried a few other spots, but either they were busy or the rain came β€” so we ended up finishing the day with an indoor climb at @climbinghut_ep . Honestly, I love that wall so much, the slab set there is so good and we ended up just having the best session. We climbed so hard we couldn’t even hold a coffee cup by the end! β˜•οΈπŸ’ͺ Big thank you to everyone who’s donated so far, it means the world πŸ’›

⏳ 3 Weeks to Go!

How is it only 3 weeks until I set off on my 630-mile hike along the South West Coast Path!? The weeks seem to be going by so quickly now. Had a super busy weekend …. πŸ₯Ύ Went up the Wrekin on Friday after work with my good friend @chris4655 to do a bit of a training hike. We walked just over 7miles, and I decided to pack my bag with the majority of the kit I’ll be taking with me on the hike to do a bit of weight training. I could feel the extra 20kg in my legs when I was walking up and down the hills which gave me a little taster of what is to come. πŸ§—β€β™€οΈ Went climbing with @morvendavidson97 at @bigdepot.manchester on Saturday and had the best climbing session ever, was so good to finally check this place out and then met up with the rest of the climbing girls for some lovely dinner. ✈️ And then to top the weekend off, I spent Sunday at @rafcosfordairshow with the crew providing fire cover. It was a great, but long, day, however it was great to see all the planes fly across the sky.

5 weeks today I’ll be setting off on my 630-mile solo hike along the South West Coast Path to mark my 30th – and raise money for three amazing causes πŸ’› I spent Thursday doing a solo wild camp and an 11mile hike in Wales with the doggos – testing my gear, pushing my comfort zone, and getting a taste of the challenge ahead. It was tough, peaceful, and there were ticks everywhere 🀒 … but it reminded me exactly why I’m doing this. First solo wild camp

Interesting wild camp in the Peak District at the weekend … Although the sunshine was absolutely stunning and I had an amazing sunset, the winds were pretty bad. My initial plan was to head to Snowdonia for my first solo wild camp of the year as it always feels familiar, safe and like home, however, after checking the mountain weather and seeing a forecast of winds of around 50mph I decided it would be safer to head to the Peak District where they were forecast around 20-30mph. After arriving at the Snake Pass the gusts felt a lot stronger than 20-30mph and I was contemplating whether bail and head home, but knowing that I wouldn’t have this option when I’m on the South West Coast path I decided to persevere. I headed up to Bleaklow Head and spent around 30 minutes wandering around, trying to find the most sheltered spot to call home for the night. After struggling to find anywhere completely sheltered, I settled on what felt less exposed to the winds. During the night I had hoped that the winds would settle, but this was not the case so I didn’t get the best nights sleep. It was pretty cold as well (and those who know me well know I hate the cold) but I did have little Charlie snuggled up to me in my sleeping bag who felt like a little hot water bottle. Once packed up in the morning we went on and continued our hike, heading down into Glossop and then back up to Snake Pass along the Doctor’s gate path which was lovely. Both dogs were super well behaved, it’s not always easy wild camping solo with both dogs, but it always feels so rewarding ❀️

First training wild camp

On the 22nd March I completed my first wild camp of 2025 and the first training wild camp to celebrate the 100 day mark untill my South West Coast path hike with Dan and my dog Summer πŸ™Œ Despite the horrendous weather and feeling ill, we still managed to have the best time doing this wild camp. My initial plan was to head up Sour Howes and camp at the top of Sallows, but due to the poor weather, we decided to camp up earlier on top of Sour Howes and then tick off Sallows, Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick and Troutbeck Tongue the next day. 1 wild camp, 6 wainwrights, 11.05miles and 1069m of elevation gain … a very successful first wild camp of 2025 πŸ₯°

What a day yesterday was, the sun finally decided to make an appearance for my first South West Coast path training hike β˜€οΈ My friend James and I headed up to the Lake District to try and tick off some more Wainwrights. We had an amazing day and successfully ticked off Bowscale Fell, Bannerdale Crag and Souther Fell. I also decided to take the opportunity to pack my bag with all the essentials that I will be taking along with me of the SWCP including; my tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, jet boil, spare gas, light, small down jacket, hat, gloves and first aid kit. I’m very impressed that I managed to pack all this gear into my 30L back pack, although this will not be the bag I take with me on the path as I will need room for spare clothes, more food, etc. I’m really excited to get out on more training hikes and wild camps over the next few months and share my progress ☺️
