One of my closest friends on Vancouver Island, Leslie, and I had planned to run a marathon together for our approaching significant birthdays, definitely before her 50th birthday in January 2026 and possibly before my 60th this July. Sadly this was not to be as Leslie died in November 2024 a few weeks after a cancer diagnosis. Shortly after that I decided to run a marathon in her memory and so signed up for the Edinburgh marathon which is on 25th May this year.
My first marathon was in the lead up to my 50th birthday when I chose to run for MacMillan Cancer Support in New York. I wasn't planning to run another marathon for charity however have chosen two Scottish ones this time, once again for personal reasons. A friend's husband also died in Nov '24 following a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease so am raising funds for a charity, well known to many here in Scotland, My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, www.myname5doddie.co.uk. The second charity is Mikeysline, www.mikeysline.co.uk, providing support for those struggling with mental health issues, particularly young people, in the North of Scotland and was set up following the loss of two young men to suicide. I have lost four people I know personally to suicide between 2016 & 2019 and know of a number of others have experienced the same.
I am splitting the funds raised equally between the two charities though if anyone feel strongly about donating to one specific charity let me know and I will arrange this.
