Running and Rolling for NICHS and DementiaNI
5953
Throughout 2025 Derek (dad) and Katie-Louise have challenged ourselves to run and roll a number of races from 5km to marathon distance, while we continue to promote Assisted Running here in Northern Ireland and beyond.
Katie-Louise is 9 years old and has a diagnosis of Quad Cerebral Palsy and Dystonia, a wheelchair user and non verbal. The part of the brain that is damaged means that Katie-Louise is unable to emotionally regulate herself, we have found a way of helping her regulate her emotions and help her wellbeing is by running and rolling, meeting friends and enjoy the elements outdoors, wind, rain, sunshine - she loves them all. Katie-Louise loves to make people smile and part of that is by her having created several playlists of music that we play as we run and roll for everyone to hear, dance and sing to.
We have made some truly special friends (like Brendy and Leeanne pictures above) during our first year of running together and at times our friends support Katie-Louise and myself but running alongside us, taking over pushing duties, singing, dancing and having a laugh any of which brings so much happiness to Katie-Louise and everyone around us.
While we we Run and Roll together we wanted to support two local NI charities that mean souch to us CHSNI and DementiaNI as we have seen first hand the support they provide families with, advice, guidance and most of all the amazing service each provide to those individuals or families who need support.
