WHY THESE CHARITIES?

Sarah and her team are embarking on a world record attempt on 12 May 2025 to fundraise for The Bike Project and Bikes for Refugees. These are close to Sarah's heart as she comes from a family that has been active in fostering, adoption and emergency caretaking, including successfully petitioning for the end of discriminatory adoptive practices by government agencies. Sarah now works with referral organisations to sponsor single female refugees and asylum seekers to live in her home, heal from their ordeals and transition to life in the UK. She's seen first hand how a bicycle can change their access to opportunities and quality of life, in a way very different to but resonating with the way it has changed hers.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATION

Most refugees arrive in the UK with nothing and are given as little as £8.86 per week to survive. With a bus pass costing £20, many experience transportation poverty and isolation. The Bike Project (England) and Bikes for Refugees (Scotland) are well established communities of cyclists, mechanics and volunteers who support refugees & asylum seekers by providing them with refurbished bikes and teaching them basic maintenance and riding skills (for many refugee women, this will be their first time on a bicycle).

A bike is a lifeline to access food banks, legal advice, healthcare and language lessons. If they’re lucky enough to receive official refugee status, a bike can help them find employment.

Your support will help deliver bikes to families in need, allowing them to access more opportunities. Every pound will help reduce the long waitlists (currently over 350 people with wait times of over 100 days) and ensure these two charities can keep their workshops across the country operating.

£10 - can buy a helmet or other protective equipment
£30 - can provide a young child a bicycle
£50 - can cover a 1hr 'Pedal Power' lesson, which teaches women how to ride a bike and connect them to a wider community
£150 - can provide bicycles for a small family
