Everest Challenge
On the 26th September 1975 Mynydd Climbing Club member, Pete Boardman, successfully summited Everest by the South West Face with Nepalese climbing partner Pertemba Sherpa. Led by Sir Chris Bonnington, this was the first expedition to put British climbers on the summit of the mountain and was documented by the BBC in the film 'Everest The Hard Way'. To celebrate 50 years since this great achievement, and the club's own 70th own anniversary, members will be setting their very own 'Everest Challenges' throughout the year. Money fundraised from these challenges will be split 50/50 between making improvements on the Mynydd Climbing Club's mountain hut and supporting the fantastic work of Community Action Nepal. Blaen-y-Nant is located in the tranquil Crafnant Valley in North Wales and has been leased by the Mynydd Climbing Club for over 60 years. The facility is available to club members as well as BMC affiliated clubs and individuals. The mountain hut is part of a network of similar facilities across the UK that provide access into the outdoors for climbers, mountaineers, walkers and many more. This fundraiser will help pay for two new external doors that Blaen-y-Nant is in desperate need of, alongside a range of other renovations. Community Action Nepal was founded by Doug Scott, one of the members of the 1975 South West Face expedition team members. They provide education, health and livelihood programmes to help remote mountain communities to improve their quality of life, and increase their resilience in the face of natural disasters, volatile weather conditions and global health emergencies. The Mynydd Climbing Club is keen to support this charity that has close links to our club history.
