I am fundraising for the “Coma and Disorders of Consciousness Research Centre” at Cardiff University due to my personal journey. My wife, Jenny, suffered a severe brain injury at just 46 years old, leaving her in a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness. After extensive clinical evaluations, it became evident that she would never regain a life she valued. Witnessing her trapped in this state was incredibly distressing, and for years it seemed there was no way forward.
However, I learned that there were legal and ethical frameworks in place to guide decisions about her care. After thorough review by the medical team and considering our family's input, a decision was made to transition to palliative and end-of-life care. Withdrawing life-sustaining treatments allowed Jenny to pass away peacefully. I am deeply thankful that this compassionate option was available to her.
The “Coma and Disorders of Consciousness Research Centre” has played a crucial role in advocating for such choices. They have influenced how clinical teams and legal frameworks approach these decisions, and have provided invaluable online resources and training for both families and healthcare professionals.
