As some of you may know , I lost my dad , Tony , in July 2021 after a long illness suffering from the after effects of 2 massive strokes- one in April 2016 and the other in July 2019. I have been wanting to do the Great North Run in his memory for the last few years but due to my own health and fitness issues -(diabetes and knackered knees!) i ve not managed itSadly in December 2023, just before Christmas Eve we also lost Natalies dad , Ken, which was very unexpected despite him being poorly in the months previously, and came as a massive blow to all of us. This year i am determined to do the great north run - even if i have to walk most of it! I have decided to do it for two charities in memory of both my Dad and Ken. The charities i am going to run for are the Stroke Association and Down's Syndrome North East. The Stroke Association is for the support the charity provides sufferers of this life changing event, support, advice and raising awareness over the possible prevention of the causes of a stroke and to make people aware of spotting the signs of a possible stroke event. The earlier signs are spotted , the quicker the medical response can be initiated , hopefully meaning there's less damage caused by the stroke.Down's Syndrome North East is a charity that is close to our families heart. Our daughter Paige has a close friend who has the condition and has started making her own jewellery, bracelets and key-rings which she sells to support the charity. This was something which Ken was really proud of Paige doing and was the charity we choose for donations in lieu of flowers at his funeral.Thank you for talking the time to read my page.
UPDATE - I was planning to run this year but sadly due to injury and health I have deferred to next year I WILL get round even if I had to walk!
