Greig Runs the Runway

I am running the length of Aberdeen Runway twice tonight at midnight in a bid to support three local charities; Friends of ANCHOR, Kayleigh's Wee Stars and We Too! Donations of any size are gratefully appreciated and will help each of these charities continue their amazing work. More information on each charity below.

FRIENDS OF ANCHOR:
The ANCHOR Centre will be the first of its kind in Scotland, serving people in the North-east and Northern Isles - a population of more than half a million people.

Due to open in 2023, it will be used by an estimated 250 patients every day... that's around 65,000 people a year. Day patients and outpatients will attend the brand new, purpose-built facility, located alongside the existing radiotherapy suite at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, which opened in 2013 as phase one of The ANCHOR Centre project.

The Centre will bring together oncology and haematology day patients, including those with non-malignant blood disorders, under the same roof. The building will have its own, dedicated entrance to welcome patients in swiftly and easily. Spanning three floors, the Centre will house an aseptic pharmacy, a consulting suite, a treatment suite, a Teenagers and Young Adults Lounge, a teaching and training suite, and the Friends of ANCHOR complementary therapy room, a private and relaxing spa-inspired room in which patients can make use of the charity's free wellbeing services including massage and hydrotherm, nail services, hair and wig styling and podiatry.

The site will also afford immediate access to the existing radiotherapy suite, bringing all outpatient services into an easy-to-navigate, self-contained hub.

An information hub, hosted by Friends of ANCHOR at the entrance to the Centre, will provide information and support for patients. Transport and access will be greatly enhanced, with 6 disabled parking bays and a bus stop right outside, making shuttle transport to and from CLAN Haven and the Lady Wood Car Park easy and hassle-free. Thanks to its well-considered location, the Centre will be just a short walk from the front door of the Maggie's Centre too.

KAYLEIGH'S WEE STARS
We have established Kayleigh’s Wee Stars to provide financial support for families where a child has a terminal illness. Kayleigh’s Wee Stars is based in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire and is run by 5 trustees and our CEO, who all work together to maximise the charity’s fundraising efforts to enable families to be supported when they need it most.

When our beautiful daughter was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, we made it our mission to do everything we could to make her last few months as precious and comfortable for her as we could. We wanted to make happy memories.

Alongside our families, we supported each other to remain strong during what was a very difficult time. After 6 months full of adventures, Kayleigh passed away in June 2012, snuggled in our arms.

We decided to set up Kayleigh’s Wee Stars in our daughter’s name to help other families make memories. Everyone’s circumstances are different and we aim to take the financial burden away from parents to allow them to spend time with their child when it matters most.

We are both Primary School Teachers, and as such, the only way we are able to continue the great work of the charity, is due to the teamwork between our family, our Trustees, our CEO, Fiona and our fabulous fundraisers. Without the support of fundraisers and local businesses who support us, we would not be able to keep making this important difference to the lives of so many terminally ill children, and their families, across Scotland.

WE TOO!
Originally named “Me Too!” was founded in Summer 2015, by a local parent, frustrated with the fragmentation of information in Aberdeen City and Shire when looking for activities for her disabled son. The idea was to produce a free, quarterly “What’s On” Guide for her community.

We Too! also offers peer support through “We Too! & You”, a monthly children’s club “We Too! Club” and a school holiday programme. We Too! also delivers bespoke ASN/Customer Service Training to organisations as well as 6 week parent/carer and sibling courses.
