This year’s Run Norwich 10k is different for me

I’ve taken part every year since 2023, and normally by now I’d already be training for whatever event I had coming up next. I’d be feeling excited about doing Run Norwich again, thinking about what expected time I should put in, and pushing myself to better last year’s. However, last week I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and instead of training hard, the next few months are going to involve intensive chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy.

This morning I was sitting with my trainers beside me, ready to go for a run, my phone on loud waiting to hear from the hospital about my appointment with the chemotherapy nurse. At the same time, I had the Run Norwich page open, knowing it sells out very fast, and genuinely not sure whether to register, even though I really wanted to.

It was my husband who encouraged me to do it, saying he would walk it with me if we had to.

I’ve no idea how I will respond to treatment or what I’ll be able to manage by September, but I knew I needed this - something positive to focus on, something that might give me strength, and a chance to help others at the same time.

Cancer has affected my family deeply. Taking part this year feels important for many reasons - for myself, for them, and for the charities I’m supporting.

I’m raising money for two causes that mean a great deal to me.

Cancer Research UK, for obvious reasons. Research is the reason treatments keep improving, and why treatments today give people far better chances than they once did.

RSPCA Norwich, because as a trustee I’ve seen first‑hand the amazing work and dedication the team give, always going above and beyond. Supporting them feels deeply meaningful to me, especially knowing how many animals get a second chance because of their hard work.

Your support would mean so much. Whether I run, jog, or walk every step, I’ll be doing it while going through treatment, and having this goal, knowing it will make a difference for both people and animals, will help carry me through the months ahead.

If you’re able to donate, thank you. And if not, sharing the page helps more than you might think.

This year isn’t about a finishing time. It’s about keeping going and supporting two charities that are incredibly close to my heart.
