Firstly, why we are fundraising?

The reason for the fundraising all centres around our son Isak, aka Iggy. At our 20 week scan we were informed Iggy has a life limiting heart condition. He needs a series of operations to help extend his life (he has had 2 so far) however all hearts are different and the doctors do not know how long his will last. He can go into cardiac arrest at any moment and a large proportion of children who have this condition do not make it to the age of 5. Whilst waiting for his first surgery Iggy unfortunately developed an illness called necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Iggy's bowel perforated and he had to have his large intestine removed as well as some of his small intestine and a stoma formed. Two days later he developed sepsis and we were informed to prepare ourselves. We were given two options, one, we could do palliative care or two, they could try his heart surgery as a long shot to try and help make him stronger and fight against the sepsis. They did advise that the surgical option had very limited chance of success and if was highly likely he would not make it off the operating table. We chose to go for the surgery in the hope that he may survive and to the amazement of his surgeon and hospital staff he did.

During this time The Grand Appeal provided us with a room in one of their charity accommodations across from the hospital. This makes such a difference to families, it is impossible to quantify how valuable this is. Especially, when you receive the dreaded calls during the night to tell you that your child is extremely ill, you can be there in seconds. Iggy spent his first Christmas in hospital and they made sure every child received presents from Santa, which makes that day a bit brighter for all the children on the wards.

Iggy has profound Global development delay as well as profound hearing loss due to the trauma he went through. He has made lots of progress this year and this has been hugely helped by the team at Stepping Stones. Their aim is to help children like Iggy make progress and have access to services like physio, speech and language etc and to provide support to parents. He is also able to interact with other children and play therapists and his full cheekiness comes out!

He has had an incredibly hard start to life and the charities that we are raising for have been and will continue to be a key part of our lives.

UPDATE - Iggy has just had cochlear implant surgery and we are awaiting for his activation date, exciting and nerve racking at the same time!

You can learn more about the charities by clicking on their logos at the top of the page.
