Support "Milly’s Move a Mile": Turning a Tough Journey into a Walk of Hope
I am a busy mum to my two adult sons, a wife to Brad and for 17 years, I’ve served as a primary school Headteacher. I’ve always loved the busy rhythm of life, but in the Summer of 2025, everything changed for me.
Just six months after a clear mammogram, I found a lump. By August, I was diagnosed with hormone-positive breast cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. What followed was a whirlwind of tests, two surgeries and the crushing news of moving from the hope of recovery to being told I faced a much steeper mountain of chemotherapy and further treatment.
The Current Reality I am currently navigating weekly chemotherapy; I’ve faced the physical toll of hair loss, allergic reactions, and isolation. But through the nausea and the body aches, I have been lifted by a "wave of love" from my family, friends, and colleagues.
I have also found a lifeline in Macmillan, Breast Cancer Now, and Maggie’s. When the questions and fears are loudest, these organisations have provided the reassurance, clinical expertise, and safe spaces I needed to keep going. Each of these organisations are almost fully funded by donations and without support cannot provide the help needed for cancer patients and their families.
Why Move a Mile?In a 2025 survey, only 36% of women reported checking their breasts monthly. If I hadn’t found my lump, my story and prognosis would look very different. I am passionate about raising awareness of self-check and making sure these vital support services are there for the next person who may need them.
This February a dedicated team of friends and family—spanning from the UK to Australia, New Zealand, and America are walking, running, or biking the equivalent of a mile every single day to raise funds for these incredible charities as they participate in "Milly’s Move a Mile." The aim is to complete a total of 28 miles over the month and whilst I can’t quite manage to move a mile myself every day due to my treatment, I will be walking along the front in Parkgate at 6pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I will start at The Boat House car park and walk to Nicoll’s Ice Cream shop and back to complete my mile so please walk with me if you can!
How You Can Help:I want something positive to grow from my challenge. Your donation will directly support education, research, and the essential care that helps families like mine navigate their darkest days.• Donate: Any amount helps us reach our goal.• Share: Help us spread the word about the importance of self-checking.• Support: Follow our progress as we move a mile every day this month and post updates on your social media.• Participate: If you would like to participate in Milly’s Move a Mile, please join in!
Cancer is unpredictable, but the goodness in the world is not. Thank you for moving with me, for your generosity, and for being part of my journey toward a future full of more adventures.
TargetWe are aiming for a total of £6,000 that can be shared amongst the three charities.
With love and gratitude, Amanda (Milly!) xxx
