This winter I am attempting a trekking challenge that nobody has ever undertaken before... A full send of the Scottish Watershed route in one winter. The Watershed is 1200km long and weaves its way through the very wildest parts of the country. Simply put, rain droplets that fall on the West of the line run to the Atlantic and any falling to the East run to the North Sea. It represents the mountainous spine of Scotland and the highest line you can take up the country. Due to its remoteness and distance only a handful of people have ever walked the Watershed in its entirety and none in the winter... It promises to test me to my absolute limit!
I have wrestled depression on and off over the years and know many friends and family who have experienced similar struggles with their mental health. I always find getting out in Nature and the outdoors hugely beneficial when my own mood is tanking, which is why I have chosen to support the following two charities on my massive Scottish Watershed trek!
Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales that provides direct support (helplines, therapy, housing) via its national services and local branches, campaigns for better mental health services and anti-stigma awareness, and offers extensive online information to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems. They work to improve policy, change public attitudes, and offer practical help like employment schemes and crisis support, guided by people with lived experience.
SCOTLAND: The Big Picture (STBP) is a nature restoration charity dedicated to rewilding Scotland through large-scale ecosystem recovery and powerful storytelling. Its core mission is to create a future where wildlife flourishes, people thrive, and landscapes are resilient to climate change.
