The Burton Bash
1147
This evergreen page is for all fund-raising in the memory of our Ben...
Initially for the Burton Bash - Castle to Castle Cycle bike ride, the number of events that have been inspired by Ben to raise money for these two amazing charities has been truly awe inspiring. These include (but not extensively):
The Burton Bash - Castle to Castle cycle rideGive Ben 10 in September
Ozzy's Aquathon Challenge at Warwick School
To understand why all these events are happening, please read below in Ben's own words.
"In March 2021 I suffered (what I now know to be) a major seizure whilst setting out on my bicycle to meet a very good friend to go for a bike ride. However I never made it to the meeting place and woke in the back of an ambulance on route to hospital!
This resulted in being promptly being referred for MRI and EEG tests, which took place in April '21. The diagnosis of which being informed of the distressing news that I had a tumour.
Things continued to happen very quickly, with me being admitted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire in early May '21. This was to carry out a craniotomy (brain surgery) to de-bulk the tumour. I was very fortunate that the procedure was carried out without incident and that I recovered relatively quickly from this major surgery. However the results of the cell analysis confirmed the worst news, in that it was malignant.
In June '21 I started on an intensive chemotherapy session for one week and then started a 6-week treatment plan of both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Fortunately my body coped well with the treatment as it can cause many ill effects. I even managed to take part in the first Burton Bash later that year!
I've always been a very active person. My main sport was always hockey and I also enjoy road cycling with friends. Generally I struggle to sit still for long periods and I truly believe that keeping my body in good shape assisted with my recovery from surgery and with dealing with the following treatment plan over the next 18 months.
I've been blessed over my life with many great friends, and it is with the help of them that we created and continue to organise The Burton Bash. Initially intended to raise the awareness of this terrible disease and raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity and The Myton Hospice (where I received wonderful palliative care), but also to have an event that brings together family and friends to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle."
All my love
Ben
